WHO WE ARE
ENT training in Kent, Surrey and Sussex is delivered across a number of hospitals from Canterbury in Kent to Basingstoke in Hampshire, Brighton, East Sussex to North London.
The region is geographically and demographically diverse. This gives trainees a good variety of places to live, visit as well as a wide cross section of socio-economic groups and patient types who present to us. This does also mean there is quite a distance between different units so a car is strongly recommended.
The region offers rotations in general ENT as well as head and neck oncology, advanced rhinology and advanced otology.
We do not have a single centre for paediatric ENT, cochlear implants in Kent, Surrey and Sussex (yet) so paediatric ENT rotations are delivered by Evelina Hospital, London or Great Ormond Street Hospital, London. Lateral and Anterior skull base cases are carried out in Brighton (University Hospitals Sussex NHSFT)
We share our regional training days with North Thames and South Thames deaneries, with an annual mock FRCS viva days shared with Wessex deanery. There is also an annual KSS Academic day where all trainees present an academic project they are working on, which is combined with an evening social as an opportunity for face-to-face meeting of the trainees and trainers of the region.
Rotas
All compliant and most weeks are 4 days on-site
All Specialty trainee (registrar) rotas need an average of 3 clinics a week and 4 theatres a week. For the majority of rotas across the region, we have a acheived this with a rota with 4-days on-site and a set off-site day (this is specific to the job and is not chosen by the trainee)
Exceptions:
- Some jobs/consultants have 2-week rolling rotas so the off-site day may be different each week on a rolling rota basis
- Some units run a "red week"/on-call week system so these will be 5-days on-site for these weeks.
KSS repeatedly ranks highly in results of the GMC survey in terms of overall satisfaction for ENT
This comes from all ranks of trainee doctors including FYs, CTs and STs
4 of our training units are in the top 10 for ENT training in the country.
